De Europese School Den Haag (ESH) is een unieke school gevestigd in het internationale hart van Nederland. Met als motto: “We aim to inspire our students to be responsible, future focused, and proactive citizens of Europe and the world. Our mission is to provide a positive, open-minded community that fosters ambition through rich cultural and academic opportunities, inspiring lifelong learning.”
Dagelijks zetten 350 medewerkers zich in om de 1.600 leerlingen uit tientallen verschillende landen op een respectvolle, ambitieuze en positieve manier te inspireren en een lang leven leren te stimuleren.

ESH is onderdeel van de Stichting Het Rijnlands Lyceum, en bestaat (in de Nederlandse onderwijscontext) eigenlijk uit 2 scholen: een school voor primair onderwijs (Primary) en een school voor voortgezet onderwijs (Secondary). ESH is een door de Nederlandse overheid gesubsidieerde school die leerlingen opleidt voor het Europees baccalaureaat. De kwaliteit van het onderwijs is gebaseerd op de Europese regelgeving en accreditatie. De (Nederlandse) inspectie van het onderwijs houdt daarnaast toezicht op meer algemene zaken zoals leerplicht en goed bestuur. Het merendeel van de leerlingen heeft ouders die werkzaam zijn bij een Europese organisatie.

De directeur is lid van het directieberaad van de stichting en eindverantwoordelijk voor ESH. De directeur ESH geeft leiding aan de heads of school Primary en Secondary, die (via doormandatering) verantwoordelijk zijn voor de dagelijkse aansturing van hun school. Op korte termijn wordt het senior management uitgebreid met een conrector Bedrijfsvoering. De taak van de directeur ligt vooral bij het verbinden van beide scholen en bij het integraal organisatie- en onderwijsbeleid. Daarbij zorg je dat er als één ESH naar buiten wordt getreden en je bent extern de verbindende factor met een bijzonder stakeholderveld, met onder meer Europese instellingen en agentschappen, andere Europese scholen, de beheersorganisatie voor Europese scholen in Brussel, het ministerie van OCW, de gemeente Den Haag, lokale (onderwijs, zorg, welzijn en veiligheids-) partners en de stichting.

Uitdagende positie in een complex speelveld met inhoudelijke en organisatorische opgaven

Je komt te werken in een internationale, dynamische, open en diverse gemeenschap met inspirerende en gemotiveerde collega’s en leerlingen. Het is een unieke en jonge school waar vele talen en culturen samenkomen en elke dag weer anders is. De kwaliteit van het onderwijs en de ambities zijn hoog en de ontwikkeling van leerling- en personeelsaantallen zien er positief uit. Je onderhoudt interessante externe Europese en Nederlandse contacten en werkt op directieniveau samen met de andere scholen binnen de stichting. Je houdt je bezig met zowel PO- als VO-gerelateerde onderwerpen. Gezien de snelle groei van de afgelopen jaren (van 0 naar 1.600 leerlingen in 10 jaar tijd) stap je in op een interessant transitiemoment. Er is een goede basis gelegd. Om de exploitatie gezond te houden is er intensieve aandacht nodig voor bedrijfsvoering vanuit de school en de Stichting.
De nieuwe directeur staat samen met het overige management voor de uitdaging om de onderwijs- en ondersteunende processen te optimaliseren, de kwaliteit te borgen en als organisatie en in het leiderschap door te ontwikkelen. Daarbij zijn een heldere koers, koersvastheid, communicatie, zichtbaarheid en betrokkenheid van belang. Extern bouw je verder aan de relaties en zorg je voor een goede reputatie, voor vertrouwen in de kwaliteit van ESH en je zorgt voor duurzame, zakelijke afspraken.
Al deze uitdagingen spelen zich af in een unieke organisatie met twee scholen, een zeer diverse populatie leerlingen en medewerkers, met zowel publieke als private financiering, complexe wettelijke kaders en onderwijslogistiek, actieve ouders en een breed stakeholderveld. Geen dag is hetzelfde!

Verder biedt Stichting het Rijnlands Lyceum:

• Inschaling vindt plaats conform CAO VO, schaal 15, maximaal € 7.922,-- bruto per maand
• Een aantrekkelijk pakket secundaire arbeidsvoorwaarden, waaronder:

– Een vakantiegeld uitkering van 8% en een eindejaarsuitkering van 8,33% van het bruto jaarloon.

Zichtbaar en toegankelijk voor stakeholders op verschillende niveaus binnen de school en daarbuiten. Als boegbeeld van de school vervul je een voorbeeldfunctie, onderhoud je goede relaties met de externe partners, zorg je voor profilering en zakelijke afspraken en realiseer je duurzame samenwerkingen en partnerschappen. Als leider ben je je bewust van ieders rol, geef je richting en duidelijke kaders en motiveer je medewerkers. Onder meer vanwege de grote culturele diversiteit toon je inlevingsvermogen en communiceer je duidelijk en proactief. Hierdoor creëer je stabiliteit en draagvlak voor beslissingen. Je bent een verbinder die zich makkelijk beweegt tussen de diverse relevante geledingen, waaronder de betrokken en actieve medezeggenschap.

Verder voldoe je onder andere aan de volgende profieleisen:

• Ruime eindverantwoordelijke managementervaring in de semi-publieke sector. Ervaring in of met het onderwijs en/of een internationale omgeving zijn een pré.
• Ervaring in het opbouwen van en richting geven binnen een complex strategisch stakeholdernetwerk in de (semi-)publieke wereld.
• Kennis van of ervaring in het Nederlandse onderwijssysteem, wet- en regelgeving, financiering en CAO’s is een pré. Affiniteit met onderwijs(vraagstukken) een must.
• Uitstekende beheersing van de Nederlandse en Engelse taal, in woord en geschrift.
• Ervaring met het aansturen van organisatie-ontwikkelprocessen, kwaliteitsborging en bedrijfsvoering.

Continuing to build on a unique, young international learning community

The European School The Hague (ESH) is a unique school located in the international heart of the Netherlands. Its motto is: “We aim to inspire our students to be responsible, future focused, and proactive citizens of Europe and the world. Our mission is to provide a positive, open-minded community that fosters ambition through rich cultural and academic opportunities, inspiring lifelong learning.”
Every day, 350 staff members are committed to inspiring 1,600 students from dozens of different countries in a respectful, ambitious and positive manner, and to stimulating lifelong learning.

ESH is part of Stichting Het Rijnlands Lyceum, and (in the Dutch educational context) actually consists of two schools: a school for primary education and a school for secondary education. ESH is a school subsidised by the Dutch government that trains students for the European Baccalaureate. The quality of education is based on European regulations and accreditation. In addition, the (Dutch) Education Inspectorate oversees more general issues such as compulsory education and good governance. Most of the students have parents working for a European organisation.

The director is a member of the executive board of the Stichting and ultimately responsible for ESH. The ESH director manages the Primary and Secondary heads of school, who are responsible (by means of delegation) for the day-to-day management of their school. In the short term, the senior management will be expanded to include a deputy director of Operations. The task of the director lies mainly in connecting the two schools and ensuring integrated organisational and educational policies. In the process, you ensure that ESH presents itself to the outside world as a single entity and externally you will be the connecting factor with a special stakeholder field, including European institutions and agencies, other European schools, the management organisation for European schools in Brussels, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the municipality of The Hague, local (education, care, welfare and safety) partners and the Stichting.

Challenging position in a complex playing field with substantive and organisational tasks

You will work in an international, dynamic, open and divers community with inspiring and motivated colleagues and students. It is a unique and young school where many languages and cultures come together, and every day is different. The quality of education and ambitions are high, and the development of student and staff numbers looks positive. You will maintain interesting external European and Dutch contacts and work together at board level with the other schools within the Stichting. You will deal with both primary and secondary education-related topics. Given the rapid growth in recent years (from 0 to 1,600 students in 10 years), you are entering at an interesting time of transition. A good foundation has been laid. Keeping the operation healthy requires intensive attention to management from the school and the foundation.
Together with other management, the new director faces the challenge of optimising teaching and support processes, ensuring quality and continued development as an organisation and in leadership. A clear direction, directional stability, communication, visibility and commitment are important in this respect. Externally, you will continue to build relationships and ensure a good reputation, confidence in the quality of ESH and you will ensure sustainable, business agreements.

Profile: a connecting and steady figurehead

As ESH director, you will build on this rapidly growing and ambitious school based on an overview with a clear vision. You are a firm, driven, inspiring and connecting leader. Visible and accessible to stakeholders at different levels within the school and beyond. As the school’s figurehead, you set an example, maintain good relations with external partners, arrange profiling and business agreements, and realise sustainable collaboration and partnerships. As manager, you are aware of everyone’s role, provide direction and clear frameworks and motivate members of staff. Partly because of the considerable cultural diversity, you show empathy and communicate clearly and proactively. As a consequence, you create stability and support for decisions. You are a connector who moves easily between the various relevant echelons, including the committed and active participation councils.

Furthermore, you meet the following profile requirements, among others:

• Extensive senior management experience in the semi-public sector. Experience in or with education and/or an international environment are an advantage.
• Experience in the development of and providing direction within a complex strategic stakeholder network in the (semi-)public world.
• Knowledge of or experience in the Dutch education system, legislation and regulations, funding and collective agreements are an advantage. Affinity with education (issues) is a must.
• Excellent command of the Dutch and English languages, verbally and in writing.
• Experience in driving organisational development processes, quality assurance and operations.
